"The Secret Sun" blog-man, Christopher Knowles, did not have the time to put up, on his blog, the interesting work of Marita. My suspicion is that he just didn't want the hoojo anti-mojo vibes that this post, unfortunately, likely contains. ;)

So this blog'll be the "sin eater." And we'll have our spirits chase away the bad ones.

This is a more complete version of what I wanted to send you last week, but didn't have time. I just wanted to add more of my thoughts and ideas on the archetypes, Tarot and general symbolism of the comparisons, because this was jumping out for me when I saw the story break and the promos of the movie.
I have no idea if this will make sense to you, or if this is significant enough but maybe you can make something of it. There is a bit more not very significant but very interesting nonetheless, I'll send it tomorrow. I have a problem with my ADSL line, they can be very slow here in South Africa and the e-mail is too big to send, so I'll have to do it in two sections.

but in reality she is the archetypical crone.

(The older / younger female motif, and the twin motif, resonates to the Biblical story of Jacob or "Yacov". In some interpretations, Leah and Rachel are twins, and in other interpretations simply sisters. Leah is the older and Jaob is tricked into marrying her, when his soul mate, or true love, is the younger sister Rachel. This two-sisters-in-love-with-the-same-man was reenacted in the Hollywood movie, "27 Dresses"

The Crow was based upon a comic book character, as was Batman.

"The Crow", starring Brandon Lee (Son of Bruce, who also could have been murdered), is about Eric Draven (Raven), played by Lee, who dies and is brought back by an othernatural force, "The Crow."

The movie features esoteric symbolism. The actor, Brandon Lee, dies on the set of the movie. He's shot with a gun meant to be used as a prop, which someone just happened to load for real. Lee was 28, just as was Heath Ledger, at his death this year.

"Adapted from James O’Barr’s 1989 graphic novel, The Crow is a marvelously dark and exciting film.. It willfully celebrates the Gothic nihilism of the modern graphic novel and is indeed the most darkly exhilarating of all filmed comic-book adaptations to emerge in the wake of Batman (1989)."

Crows.. Known as the clowns of the bird world.

"Native American tradition: Crow is an omen of Change. Crow lives in the void and has no sense of time, therefore, it sees past, present and future simultaneously. Crow merges both light and dark, both inner and outer. It is the totem of the Great Spirit and must be respected as such.[]

The crow as an archetype: Archetypical crows are also compared to the Jester/Trickster - "Mythic poets," Hughes wrote in Shakespeare and the Goddess of Complete Being, "...seem to be a distinct biological type". In their work, beneath the "surface glitter of the plot", there lies a deep "mythic plane" where, as for the Occult Neoplatonists of Shakespeare's time, "all archaic mythological figures and events are available as a thesaurus of glyphs or token symbols".

Hughes was interested in Occult Neo-Platonism, in Cabbalah, and in Alchemy and he was knowledgeable about all these arts.

Hughes, therefore, makes it clear that Crow has many characteristics in common with the Human. Also, given the cheeky, interfering, amoral, destructive and sometimes constructive personality which emerges through the medium of Crow's "life and songs", plus Hughes' own predilection for mythological archetypes, the comparison of Crow with the Trickster figure common in many mythologies is natural.

By adopting and developing this trickster figure Hughes was, therefore, extending his exploration into his own mind and (if Jung is correct in his interpretation of Trickster), into the human mind in general. In so doing, Hughes extended the death/rebirth theme of his poetry to include the idea of spiritual growth and rebirth for the Human, which is a most important part of the Trickster Cycle. This pattern has been traced in detail in the Crow poems by Sagar and Hirschberg."

"THE SIN EATER" / ALSO RELEASED AS "THE ORDER":

"The Order" features the same theme as "The Crow" - Souls which have no peace.

People once believed that when someone dies a crow carries that soul to the land of the dead.

But sometimes, something so bad happens, that terrible sadness is carried with it. And the soul can't rest. And sometimes the crow can bring that soul back to put the wrong things right: Opening narration of "The Crow."

"The Sin Eater"/ "The Order": The title refers to an ancient order of rogue priests who ate food off corpses, believing that they were taking unforgiven sins upon themselves and absolving the dead.

In the film, a Sin Eater resurfaces in modern-day Rome, and allows great evil to go unpunished.

The special effects show sins "flying out" of bodies.

An earlier character, than the one created by David, named "Sin-Eater" first appeared in Ghost Rider #80. Ethan Domblue was a pastor obsessed to have a sinless congregation. Ghost Rider foe, Centurious, gave Ethan the power to "eat" his Congregation's sins, leaving them in a passive, "sinless" state.

However, he did not realize that by placing his parishioner's souls in the Crystal of Souls to "purify" them, he was creating an army of zombie-like slaves loyal to Centurious.

"The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus" is an upcoming American fantasy-adventure film directed by Terry Gilliam and written by Gilliam and screenwriter Charles McKeown. In the film, the leader of a traveling theater troupe, through a deal with the Devil, takes audience members through a magical mirror to explore their imaginations.

Christopher Plummer, Tom Waits, and Heath Ledger star in the film.

Though the death of Ledger midway through filming caused production to be temporarily suspended, Ledger's role was recast with Johnny Depp, Jude Law, and Colin Farrell portraying physically changed transformations of Ledger's character as he travels through dimensions.

The projected release date for this film is 2009.

In the present day, the immortal 1,000-year-old Doctor Parnassus (Plummer) leads a traveling theater troupe that offers audience members a chance to go beyond reality through a magical mirror in his possession.

Parnassus had been able to guide the imagination of others through a deal with the Devil (Waits), who now comes to collect on the arrangement.

As in the story/Legend "Dr. Faustus," the young female is the target - the doctor's daughter in this case (Lily Cole). The troupe, who is joined by a mysterious outsider named Tony (Ledger), embark through parallel worlds to rescue the girl.

Ledger's role was recast to have 3 new actors portray his "physically transformed versions" in the realm.

THE TAROT, THE JOKER/JESTER/CLOWN:

At every journey's start, there is the impetus that takes us forward. This force exists before any physical movement. Consciously or subconsciously, all of our self-aware actions are dictated by our will. Before taking any journey, first the will must want to take the journey. It is the force which sends the signal that allows the foot to take the step.

The Fool represents this force. The Fool is the first card of the Major Arcana, but its number is 0. It resides outside of the Major Arcana, and it can be taken as the state that signifies the beginning.

The Fool represents bravery at the start of a journey and the willingness to travel beyond the known territory, and so it is often seen manifested in rights of passage or as the first step of an Initiate. The Initiate starts off with a vague understanding of the consequences involved but exhibits a willingness to follow the path anyway. There is a, perhaps, subconscious understanding that at the end of the trail will be answers, but this is more faith than anything else.

Some people find clowns disturbing rather than amusing. It is not uncommon for children to be afraid of disguised, exaggerated, or costumed figures — even Santa Claus.

In his writings of the late 1980s, Henry Louis Gates, Jr. presents the concept of Signifyin(g). Wound up in this theory is the idea that the “master’s house” can be “dismantled” using his “tools,” if the tools are used in a new or unconventional way.

To demonstrate this process, Gates cites the interactions found in African American narrative poetry between the trickster, the “Signifying Monkey”, and his oppressor, the Lion.

According to Gates, the “Signifying Monkey” is the “New World figuration” and “functional equivalent” of the Esu trickster figure of African Yoruba mythology. The Lion functions as the authoritative figure in his classical role of “King of the Jungle.” He is the one who commands the Signifying Monkey’s movements. Yet the Monkey is able to outwit the Lion continually in these narratives through his usage of figurative language.

According to Gates, “[T]he Signifying Monkey is able to signify upon the Lion because the Lion does not understand the Monkey’s discourse. The monkey speaks figuratively, in a symbolic code; the lion interprets or reads literally and suffers the consequences of his folly…” In this way, the Monkey uses the same language as the Lion, but he uses it on a level that the Lion cannot comprehend. This usually leads to the Lion’s “trounc[ing]” at the hands of a third-party, the Elephant. The net effect of all of this is “the reversal of [the Lion’s] status as the King of the Jungle.” In this way, the “master’s house” is dismantled when his own tools are turned against him by the trickster Monkey.

Heath and Terry also worked together in 2005’s "The Brother's Grimm."

Anna Nicole Smith - died of a drug overdose and/or pneumonia. After her death, photos surfaced of her in strange clown makeup.

She died on Feb. 8, 2007 in room 607. Like Ledger and Brando (CHRISTIAN Brando has died - Jan 26, 2008), she had pneumonia.

USS JOHN C. STENNIS, At Sea (NNS) -- John C. Stennis Carrier Strike Group (JCSSG) kicked off Exercise Valiant Shield 2007 while operating in the U.S. 7th Fleet area of responsibility (AOR) Aug. 7.

The eight-day exercise tests the military’s ability to rapidly bring together joint forces in response to any regional contingency. It also enables the United States to contribute to regional security and stability and demonstrates U.S. commitment in the Pacific.

“Exercise Valiant Shield is a very complicated and challenging joint exercise and will test our tremendous capabilities,” said Stennis’ Commanding Officer, Capt. Brad Johanson. “However, a joint environment will be very straight-forward for Stennis, because as we demonstrated during Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom, we’re used to working in a coalition environment, which not only includes joint forces, but coalition partners.”

Along with JCSSG, the Nimitz and Kitty Hawk Carrier Strike Groups, and U.S. Air Force, Coast Guard and Marine Corps forces are also participating in Valiant Shield.

“The Marine Corps thrives in a joint environment, and we bring a lot to the table,” said Maj. Daniel Goodwin, executive officer assigned to the “Death Rattlers” of Strike Fighter Squadron (VMFA) 323. “I look forward to this exercise, because we’re going to be doing some operations that will make us better prepared, better trained and keep us sharp.”

In all, more than 20,000 Sailors, Airmen, Marines and Coast Guardsmen will participate in the exercise that involves 30 ships and 280 aircraft.

“All joint warfighting capabilities will merge together for one set of exercise objectives,” Johanson added. “What our strike group brings, after leading four months of missions in the 5th Fleet area of operations, is a warfare commander capability to enhance the ability of all the strike groups merged together in this area of responsibility.”

With the vast area of the Pacific Ocean, integrated sea and air power is essential for immediate response to any contingency.

By bringing these forces together, this training enables real-world proficiency in detecting, locating, tracking and engaging units at sea, on land and in the air in response to a range of mission areas.

“There’s going to be more sorties than we flew in the Arabian Gulf -- about 100 a day,” said Capt. Christopher Murray, deputy commander, Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 9. “It can be challenging, but this just shows the flexibility of a carrier strike group. When we need to get in close to support ground troops, we can do that, and we’ve done that. This exercise will show another area of expertise; our ability to conduct operations in the open ocean.”

The Arabian Gulf is the body of water more commonly known as the Persian Gulf.

Valiant Shield offers a unique opportunity to have multiple aircraft carriers train together in a maritime environment and enhance operational proficiency.

“I think this whole exercise will be challenging, but it will also provide a better perspective for how to command and control these operations in a real-world scenario,” said Goodwin.

Safety and the environment are also top priorities during Valiant Shield. The U.S. military is committed to good stewardship of the environment.

“We care very much about the safety of our crew and the environment, as we complete these very complex evolutions,” said Johanson. “We always follow set environmental policies with strict adherence, while still completing Stennis’ vital mission at sea.”

This is the second year the U.S. military has conducted Valiant Shield off the coast of Guam. The first Valiant Shield exercise was conducted in June 2006.

“We are really in our prime for this exercise,” said Johanson. “We have been leaders of Expeditionary Strike Force operations for quite some time now. As a result, one of our major missions will be to pass on to our partners in Valiant Shield those Expeditionary Strike Force best practices we have accumulated over the past six-and-a-half months.”

JCSSG includes the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74), embarked CVW-9, Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 21, the guided-missile cruiser USS Antietam (CG 54), the guided-missile destroyers USS O’Kane (DDG 77), USS Preble (DDG 88) and USS Paul Hamilton (DDG 60) and the fast combat support ship USNS Bridge (T-AOE 10). More than 6,500 Sailors and Marines are assigned to JCSSG.

The squadrons of CVW-9 include: the “Black Knights” of Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 154, “Blue Diamonds” of VFA-146, “Argonauts” of VFA-147, Death Rattlers of VMFA-323, “Yellow Jackets” of Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 138, “Golden Hawks” of Carrier Airborne Early Warning Squadron (VAW) 112, “Top Cats” of Sea Control Squadron (VS) 31, “Eightballers” of Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron (HS) 8 and “Providers” of Fleet Logistics Support Squadron (VRC) 30.

“This has been a very successful cruise for Stennis, the air wing, DESRON 21 and our other strike group ships,” said Murray. “Everyone has done a fantastic job, and we plan to finish this deployment strong by performing well in this exercise.”

Stennis, JCSSG’s flagship, left her homeport of Bremerton, Wash., Jan. 16 for a regularly-scheduled deployment and has conducted operations in the U.S. 5th Fleet and the U.S. 7th Fleet AOR.
